چکیده

Background: Several types of neurogenic tumors can occur in mediastinum and commonly present as posterior mediastinal mass lesions. Generally they are categorized in to those arising from peripheral nerves or sympathetic ganglia. Schwannoma is the most common neurogenic tumor of this area. Generally they are presented as solid encapsulated lesions and are difficult to miss on radiology. Rarely they can be large enough to undergo cystic degeneration and cause confusion with other cystic mass lesions of the area. Large masses can also cause pressure symptoms and leads to respiratory compromise. Conclusion: Posterior mediastinal schwannomas though usually are benign and asymptomatic but can prove fatal if attain a very large size. It should always be included in the differential diagnosis of posterior mediastinal large cystic masses. Degenerative nuclear atypia associated with ancient schwannoma should not be confused with malignancy. Patient can lead a symptom free life after surgical resection of these tumors.

Ancient Schwannoma of the Trigeminal Nerve Mimicking High Grade Lesion

Ancient schwannomas rarely found in the central nervous system and ancient change in an intracranial schwannoma (intracranial portion of the trigeminal nerve) is extremely rare. A seventy-year man presented with headache of 3 months duration and one episode of generalized tonic-clonic seizures. Imaging findings were suggestive of left temporal high grade lesion. During surgery there was well...

Ancient schwannoma of vagus nerve mimicking hamartoma.

Schwannomas arising from vagus nerve sheath are rare mediastinal neurogenic tumours. Schwannomas usually arise from left hemithorax. Unlike a hamartoma, radiologically, calcification is rarely seen in schwannomas. We present the rare case of an ancient schwannoma arising from vagus nerve sheath from the right hemithorax presenting with gross calcification.

Giant Posterior Mediastinal Ancient Schwannoma Requiring Thoracoabdominal Resection: A Case Report and Literature Review

Posterior mediastinal schwannomas are benign, slow growing nerve sheath tumors and rarely cause symptoms. We present a case of a 47-year-old man who presents with severe mid-back pain and dyspnea on exertion. Chest radiograph and computed topography revealed a large posterior mediastinum mass. Surgical resection required en bloc resection of a portion of the diaphragm, and wedge resection of th...

Cystic Giant Sacral Schwannoma Mimicking Aneurysmal Bone Cyst : A Case Report and Review of Literatures

To present a rare case of a cystic giant schwannoma of the sacrum mimicking aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC). A 54-year-old man visited our institute complaining left leg weakness and sensory change for several years. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a large multilocular cystic mass with canal invasion and bone erosion confined to left S1 body. The lesion showed multiple septal enhancement without...

Mediastinal Castleman's disease mimicking thoracic paravertebral schwannoma.

A 51-year-old female underwent resection of a solid lesion in the posterior mediastinum, preoperatively interpreted at imaging as thoracic schwannoma, requiring double sequential surgical procedure to be resected. The histologic examination of the resected mass diagnosed a hyaline-vascular Castleman's disease.
